Here’s A Sneak Peek at New Islamabad Airport Ahead of Its 14th August Launch

One of the biggest airports in Pakistan, the new Islamabad Airport, will be ready for operations around the latter half of July.

The airport is expected to be ready by March this year and is around 95% complete. It will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on 14th August.

In a meeting presided by the Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif,  several officials of the Aviation Division, National Highway Authority (NHA), Islamabad Mayor, and other officials joined in to review progress on the new airport. At the meeting, the Prime Minister stated that infrastructure projects are the backbone of our economy and essential for the public.

New Islamabad Airport’s Features

The airport will be able to service 4,500 people at a time. It will have 15 parking bays and will be able to dock 2 Airbus A-380 planes at the same time. New Islamabad Airport will have state of the art facilities for cargo handling, safety and security, passenger facilitation and parking services.

Two main access roads from M-1 and M-2 motorways will be linked to the airport. Additionally the GT Road will also be linked with the airport.

The New Islamabad Metro Bus Project

A new Islamabad Metro Bus project worth Rs. 18 Billion will connect the existing Metro bus service to Islamabad Airport as well.

The bus service will also be inaugurated with the New Islamabad Airport. It will consist of 4 interchanges and 14 bus stops and will have two major sections. The first section will connect Peshawar Mor with to G-13 sector and the second section will connect G-13 to the N-5 interchange.

Design Flaws

The airport was plagued with design flaws which were the main cause of the delays for the finishing of the airport project.

Two of the runways were originally planned to allow simultaneous takeoff and landing for two airplanes at a time. The runways were constructed too close together which now only allows one plane to takeoff or land at a time.

Hopefully the new airport will not face more delays than it already has. It was originally going to be finished on December 2016 but it was delayed to June 2017 then again to August. It has been delayed by 5 years and its total cost has exceeded Rs. 100 billion in total.

  • If I am correct this is the airport in which they have flaws and their runway space is not according to international standards?

    • *had

“Two of the runways were originally planned to allow simultaneous takeoff and landing for two airplanes at a time. The runways were constructed too close together which now only allows one plane to takeoff or land at a time”

    • That flaw is in accordance with international flights.
      .
Does’t say local flights cant use it simultaneously, @CAA #CAA ; ha ha ha
Thats how close to each other govt departments perform.

  • Waste of money, since its not really required to build in “Islamabad” they need to research on feasibility report, which can tells, what location is best the major airport build. just because its capital does not justify the build.

    • ISB airport not only serves ISB city alone but entire northern region including AJK, Northern areas, Pothohar reigon(Rwp, Jehlum Chakwal), and parts of KPK too for all international flights… We have a Bacha Khan International Airport in Peshawar but that too seemz to be no different from a local bus terminal…. sadly its in very poor state…

lolzzz having traveled from ISB airport can safely say that even the existing airport badly needs up gradations… Recent renovations had given some face-lift but still better airport is badly needed.

        • yeh right now the current airport name is SBBIA…..i agree to your point(may be some others persons might not) but providing proper facilities is more important naming issue is secondary for me..

      • I didn’t said a better Airport is not requires, but as I traveled many times in ISB, I didn’t see peoples and rush in ISB, so what I was saying is building a biggest Airport is waste of money without proper feasibility report. the feasibility can tell you where the Airport is required and where the biggest Airport is required. but just for the sake of “Capital City” its completely Waste of Money.

        • normally as a part of SOP, each & every project do have a feasibility report… including all the metros, & motorways…
however argument can be about having the right priorities for govt. expenses..

  • Didn’t CAA refuted the claims and stated that there were never plans to have both runways for simultaneous operations? As far as I remember, they’ve always said that the second runway is only for use as an alternative option as it is in LHE and KHI.

    • yeh rightoo.. as a common sense we doesn’t have that much air traffic at Islamabad which needs for two planes to simulatenously landing/take-off…
It could have been an added advantage but could not be utilized,,,however even this design fault could not be reason for long delays in completion of project….
