1st Test Match: Pakistani Batsmen Surrender Against Sri Lanka

Pakistan batting line-up crumbled against the weaker Sri Lankan bowling in the first Test match on Monday, despite restricting the opposition to a low total of 136.

After a commendable display in the first innings, Pakistani batsmen were not shy of disappointing the nation in the second innings to hand the Sri Lankan team a victory.

First Innings Recap

The match began with Sri Lanka winning the toss and deciding to bat first and put 419 on the scoreboard. The standout player was LD Chandimal who returned to pavilion not-out on 155.

Pakistan chased down the lead with style and swagger; a good opening partnership with solid middle and lower order performances enabled Pakistan to register a 3 run lead. Star performances came from Shan Masood, Azhar Ali and Haris Sohail — who scored 59, 85 and 76 respectively.

Run Down of Second Innings

Yasir Shah delivered a remarkable five-wicket haul and restricted the Sri Lankan team to a total of 136.

It seemed as if Pakistan had already won, given how confidently the batsmen performed in the first innings. But that wasn’t to be.

Although Pakistan’s ability to choke in a winnable situations is truly commendable, but it is becoming rather gruesome sight for fans who travel from different countries to watch them disappoint so often.

Sri Lankan bowlers dismissed both the openers and the middle-order batsmen very cheaply and moved into a commanding position; Sami Aslam was sent back to pavilion after scoring 2 runs, Azhar Ali 0, Shaan Masood 7, Babar Azam 3 and Asad Shafiq for 20.

It seemed like a classic case of Pakistan-chase where the national team would deliver a heartbreak-like performance to begin with but in the end, would emerge victorious but that was not the case.

After the departure of the Pakistani skipper for 19, Haris Sohail took charge and managed to take Pakistan to a total of 98 before being caught LBW by Perera for 34 runs in the 38th over.

The tumbling of wickets in quick succession proved too devastating for the tail enders and they, too, could not hold on for long.

This is the first time since 20 years that Pakistan has been unable to chase a score under 150 runs since October 1997

The criticism might be unfair but it most certainly isn’t in this scenario.

For Sri Lanka, the star was Rangana Herath, who managed to secure 5 wickets in the first innings and 6 in the following; finishing with a phenomenal figures of 11 for 136 runs.

  • The Pakistan team cannot chase 100 runs in 2nd innings and that is in their genes i guess. Faisalabad 1998 they surrendered for 98 chasing 140+ and Sydney 2009 surrendered for 140 odd chasing 183 and in 2016 surrendered for 83 chasing 183 against Windies. The problem is tuk tuk mindset which allow the opposition to exert extra pressure and their toothless bowlers become giansts all of a sudden. If Herath of other bowlers were so great why they were thrashed 3 nil by Indians in their own backyard. Like our politics cricket is also marred with politics. Need major overhaul. Honeymoon period after Champions Trophy is over now.

      • pitch problem sirf Pakistan ko he hoti hae kia? check osman samiuddin analysis on cricinfo there was no deterioration in the pitch. This has become mindset of Pakistan team. Our team cannot chase 100 runs and thats a fact. Soon they wont be able to chase 50 runs. Pakistan played horrible. Even Bangladesh chased 180 against Sri Lanka and Herath was playing recently in Sri Lanka. Pakistan couldnt chase against West Indies recently. And BTW pitch was prepared per Pakistan request.

          • bhai aik champions trophy jeetne se hamari batting ki kamzorian chup nhe jayen g.Why cant our academies produce good technical batsmen like India, Sri Lanka? Really pathetic to see we can’t chase 135 runs? I mean that is shameful? do u know what Pakistan is the only team to be bowled out for under 60 twice in same test? that happened in 2003. first innings 59 all out and 2nd inns bowled out for 53 and what was the ground. no perth, no headingly, no jamaica, no nagpur, no jo’burg. It was Pakistan favorite ground ‘Sharjah’. Would you explain it. The thing is our cricketers are selected from street 6rs like umar akmal and they have no technique to play international cricket and when they do reach the int’l arena they don’t know what to do beside putting shameful performances.

  • In Test Match Day & Is Tough for Chasing & Making Any Run Due to Pitch is Poor.
Any Way Well Done Played & Well Played By Middle Order & Bowler Batting :
Hope You Can Win the Toss & Selected the Batting First : You Will Win : INSHAH ALLAH
