Cristiano Ronaldo has done it again! The Portuguese has won a record-equalling fifth Balon d’Or award for the best player — and for the second successive time — on Thursday.
The victory has taken the Real Madrid star level with Barcelona’s star player Messi, who won the most recent of his five awards in 2015.
Last season, Ronaldo’s contribution saw Madrid win the Champions League and their first La Liga title since 2012.
The iconic number 7 added his latest award to those which he won in 2008, 2013, 2014 and in 2016.
Speaking at the ceremony, he said:
This is something I look forward to every year. Thanks to my Real Madrid team-mates. And I want to thank the rest of the people who helped me reach this level.
The 2016-17 season proved to be one of his most successful years for the former Manchester United star.
He helped his international side, Portugal, win the Euro 2016. He scored 42 goals for Real Madrid in all competitions as they won their 33rd La Liga title and 12th European Cup.
Cristiano scored twice in the Champions League final which saw his side cruise past Juventus 4-1.
It has truly been a fantastic journey for Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, both sitting on 5 Balon d’Or awards. This remarkable achievement has completely revolutionized the football history and their names will be long remembered.
