Faster UFS 3.0 Storage Announced for Future Flagships

Memory cards are about to get a whole lot faster thanks to a long awaited upgrade.

JEDEC (chip/memory standard organization) has announced the new UFS standards with UFS 3.0, which will help you achieve almost double the speed that you are currently getting from your smartphone’s storage.

With the ever growing demand of bulky phone storage, an important point that a layman may overlook is its affect upon the performance. With UFS 3.0, JEDEC promises to double up the bandwidth while using lower power to boot.

Technology Explained

If you go by the key points that help UFS 3.0 achieve these speeds, the first one is its upgraded bandwidth carrying lanes. A single lane of UFS 3.0 can carry up to 11.6 Gbps which is nearly double than that of UFS 2.1 standard. You can even bundle up two lanes at a time to achieve a total speed of 23.2 Gbps.

The new standard is also enhanced with better temperature durability (-40°C to 105°C) which will improve its applications in the warmer countries and the automotive market.

Another factor that is responsible for the increase in efficiency is the voltage that is being used in UFS 3.0 standard. As opposed to the 2.7 V to 3.6 V power input of the previous generation, the operational input for this standard is reduced to 2.5 V.

Improved Reliability

Also, UFS 3.0’s refreshed operation and error logging features are said to improve its data reliability which was a lacking aspect of the previous generations. The new UFS standard has been in the rumors for quite some time.

JEDEC hasn’t announced a date for commercial availability yet, unfortunately.
