NAB Launches Inquiry Against Karachi Mayor, Former Sindh Assembly Speaker and Others

National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Karachi has authorized inquires against Speaker of Sindh Assembly Agha Siraj Durrani and Mayor Karachi Wasim Akther.

A Regional Board Meeting in this regard was held at NAB Karachi on Thursday under the Chairmanship of Director General Mohammad Altaf Bawany. The meeting was attended by Directors of Investigation Wings and their respective Investigating Teams for the concerned cases.

DG NAB Mohammad Altaf Bawany, appreciated the performance of Complaint Verification Cell, particularly the efforts of officers in unearthing major offenses against the politicians.  He issued instructions to the Directors heading the investigation wings for expediting their investigative work purely on merit, without any discrimination.

Various cases were deliberated upon during the meeting, and the following decisions were made:

Against Former Speaker of Sindh Assembly

Consequent upon completion of the Complaint Verification process, the board recommended authorization of three separate inquiries against Agha Siraj Durrani, former Speaker of Sindh Assembly. One inquiry pertains to allegations of accumulation of assets beyond known sources of income by the former Speaker. Another allegation pertains to illegal appointments of 352 people in various public entities. Last but not the least, Agha Siraj is also being investigated  over embezzlement of funds for the construction of MPA Hostel and the new Sindh Assembly building, including the appointment of Project Directors for the said projects.

Against the Mayor of Karachi and KMC Officials

NAB authorized the launch of a formal inquiry against Waseem Akhter, Mayor Karachi and officials of KMC. The allegations, prima facie verified, pertain to the budgeted amount of Rs. 36 billion and subsequent releases to KMC during 2015 to 2018 against which work in Karachi was allegedly not carried out.

Against DG Sindh Building Control Authority (CBCA)

On conclusion of a Complaint Verification process on a complaint, a recommendation was made to NAB for the authorization of a formal inquiry against Iftikhar Qaimkhani, DG Sindh Building Control Authority (CBCA) on the allegations of accumulation of assets beyond his known sources of income.

Others

Another inquiry was authorized against the management and owners of M/s Pride Builders & Developers, which is one of the allied companies of Rufi Builders and Developers.  Inquiry was authorized over allegations of cheating the public. The firm booked more than 1600 residential and commercial plots valued at more than Rs. 5400 million (approx.) under the names of several allottees.  However, their building license and NOC was cancelled by the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA). Despite that, Prime Builders continued to develop and book the plots, defrauding hundreds of people in the process.

An inquiry was also authorized against the Managing Director and other officers of Sindh Industrial Trading Estate (SITE) Karachi on allegations of embezzlement of various funds and revenues of SITE. Additionally, they were also booked on the allegations of illegally allotting plots on SITE, particularly on the Super Highway.

A recommendation was made to NAB for the authorization of an investigation against Pir Fareed Jan Sarhandi, SSP over allegations that he carried out illegal recruitment of 378 constables. The inquiry was initiated on the orders of the Honorable Supreme Court of Pakistan.
