Xiaomi President Teases Mi Mix 3 With a Sliding Camera Module

Oppo and Vivo have been clearly leading the pack in the sliding camera field, with Honor recently joining in with its Magic 2 phone. Now, Xiaomi is also joining in with its own take on the trend.

In the upcoming version of its all-screen Mix 3 smartphone, the company plans to introduce a sliding mechanism, expectedly to give users an even larger display on the front of the premium phone.

The news was confirmed by Xiaomi President Lin Bin, who teased users on Weibo (Chinese social media platform) with a photo of the yet-to-be-formally-announced device.

Xiaomi Mi Mix 3

The mechanism used here looks similar to what Oppo does with its Find X smartphone, rather than Vivo’s NEX S concept. However, there is still a big difference in that Xiaomi moves the entire body of the phone upward (rather than just the camera mechanism), as is visible if you looking closely to the bottom half of the phone.

We still don’t know whether the back camera sits inside the mechanism too, as the photo only showed the front of the phone. We likely won’t have to wait much longer to know that, as the Mix 3 is set to be unveiled in October.

Not For Everyone

Sliding mechanisms are still not everyone’s cup of tea, with reliability concerns and lack of compatibility with protective covers in most cases. However, if you were never big on the notch trend, this might be the way for you.

Previous Mix phones have tried to be as aggressively full-screen as possible, though, they understandably had to leave some room for the cameras and sensors. With the Mix 3, Xiaomi can finally realize its long-standing struggle in building an all-screen handset.
