OnePlus 7 Won’t Have an Official IP Rating for Water/Dust Resistance

OnePlus has been endlessly marketing their latest upcoming flagship, the OnePlus 7. And today, we have a rather unusual teaser video about the phone.

OnePlus is continuing its long tradition of not getting an IP rating for its phones, claiming that they’re simply just extra costs added to the phone and not really necessary.

IP Rating and its Benefits

For those who don’t know, an IP rating is a standard for rating the degree of protection a device has against dust, water, and accidental contact. Phones with water/dust resistance usually have an IP rating which tells us how much water/dust the phone can withstand before getting fried.

In the video, a OnePlus 7 Pro is casually just dropped into a bucket of water to show us that there won’t be any IP rating for this phone either, but it is still going to be water resistant nonetheless.

Not Covered by Warranty

Yes our phones will cost less as a result and that is definitely welcome, but without an IP rating, we don’t really know how water resistant the phone is. We certainly don’t want to drop it into a bucket of water to find out. Especially since after OnePlus made sure to let us know that their warranty doesn’t cover for water damages.

We know that an IP rating would be the simplest way to prove our phone’s capability, but the certification doesn’t help us communicate our focus on your real experience, which is why we created this direct and relatable video to show you what our water-resistant quality can actually bring to you in your real life in a more powerful way.

From the looks of it, it seems that OnePlus wants us to blindly trust their super scientific and trusty water bucket test instead of an actual standardized IP rating.
