Have you ever wanted to photoshop people out of your pictures but lacked the skills to do it? All you need is $2.99 and an iPhone/iPad to do it.
A new app called Bye Bye Camera on iOS uses AI to remove people from your photos. It costs $2.99 and is available for iPhone, iPad and iPad Touch, and fair warning, it does the job but the results are less than perfect.
The app is a practical art project by Do Something Good, made in conjunction with artist Damjanski and two of his friends. They’re part of an “incubation collective” where coders and artists pool their resources to create projects. Bye Bye Camera is one of them.
The software behind the app is pretty simple. It uses an open-source object detection algorithm called YOLO (You Only Look Once) to identify people and a combination of AI systems to fill in their absence. Damjanski doesn’t go into technical details of how it works.
Even though it can successfully remove objects from your photos, it’s kind of slow and leaves a mess of smeared pixels in the background. Needless to say, it’s only made so you can have a bit of fun messing around with the machine learning magic and you’d be better off using Photoshop for better results.
AI is moving fast and it would be wrong to presume the feature would not become part of our daily social media apps. If you’re interested, you can download the app right now from the iOS App Store.
