4 Ways You Can Measure Your Blood Sugar Level

Diabetes is a prevalent disease all across the globe. It requires plenty of care as patients have to test their blood sugar levels regularly to keep a check on it.

Sugar or blood glucose level tests are an inseparable part of a person suffering from some form of Diabetes. Even if you get tired of finger pricks, you have to do it anyway, if you are aiming for diabetes self-management. Another important thing is the understanding of blood sugar level test ranges.

Recently, a Pakistani student from Iqra University, Mohammad Faizan developed a device for sugar level test without taking any blood. The invention has garnered plenty of praise especially from diabetes patients, who will soon have an easy alternative for blood sugar tests.

Here are the things that you need to know about diabetes:

Types of Diabetes

There are two types of diabetes: type 1 or insulin-dependent diabetes and type 2. However, a new study published in The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology has revealed that diabetes can be categorized into five types, which would make it easier for the prevention and treatment of the condition.

In addition, there are other types including gestational diabetes and prediabetes. Gestational diabetes results from insulin blocking hormones produced by the placenta during pregnancy whereas prediabetes occurs when blood sugar levels are higher than normal but lower than in type 2 diabetes.

Ways to Perform Sugar Level Test

The number of times a person may need to test his or her blood sugar levels varies. It is recommended to perform such tests several times a day to keep an eye on your sugar level.

Following are the methods for sugar level test:

Fasting Blood Sugar Test

Your doctor may advise you a Fasting Blood Sugar (FBS) test to get the readings for blood glucose levels.

Continuous Glucose Monitoring

Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) devices are used to measure sugar levels periodically, thereby helping in effective diabetes management. The sugar level test results include patterns and trends which allows you to be proactive when it comes to the highs and lows of sugar levels.

Finger Pinch

Another easy sugar level test is by pinching a drop of blood from your finger using a glucometer. Place the drop on the test strip, which you can get from your local pharmacies, to know your results. It hardly takes 15 seconds to get the results.

Other Meters

There are newer meters available for sugar level test in the market which can measure results from other parts of the body such as lower and upper arms etc.
