UN Committee Unanimously Accepts Pakistan’s Resolution on Right to Self-determination

Pakistan’s permanent representative to the United Nations (UN) Munir Akram has moved a resolution in a key committee of the UN General Assembly which recognizes the right to self-determination of people subjugated by colonial, alien, or foreign occupation.

The UN committee unanimously adopted the resolution with representatives of 81 countries also signing it.

Its main purpose is to bring the struggles of Kashmiri and Palestinian people at the forefront in the UN. The resolution states that the right to self-determination of Kashmiri and Palestinian people cannot be undermined.

Munir Akram argued that the right to self-determination is recognized in numerous international laws and UN resolutions. He informed the committee that after revoking Article 370, India has intensified its brutish tactics to suppress the Kashmiri freedom movement, removing the autonomous status of Muslim majority states of Jammu and Kashmir.

Jammu and Kashmir have been under a strict curfew from August 5. The Indian government has also suspended internet and phone services in the occupied valley.

Kashmiris are unable to exercise their rights as dictated by international laws. By impeding the right to move freely, the Indian government has violated several international laws.

As a result of the curfew and communication blackout, all sorts of economic and educational activities have been suspended in the region.
