Following the outbreak of the Coronavirus in Wuhan, China, in December last year, it was thought that a vaccine would take years to develop.
However, it took less than a year for the first effective vaccine to be delivered and initiate the vaccination campaign from the UK.

In April this year, the World Health Organization (WHO) revealed that there were more than 70 Coronavirus vaccine candidates under development or clinical trials around the globe.
While a handful of these candidates have been proven effective after final stage clinical trials till now, a number of countries had pre-ordered these vaccines in bulk before any clinical trial took place.

Most of these doses have been pre-ordered by either the rich nations or countries adversely affected by the Coronavirus pandemic.

More than 700 million doses of Coronavirus vaccines have been ordered by COVAX as well.
COVAX is a joint fund for equitable distribution of COVID-19 vaccines led by GAVI, a Geneva-based public-private global health alliance for low-income countries.
Pakistan is also in talks with eight different pharmaceutical companies to procure the vaccines for Coronavirus. The country also successfully submitted the request for the Coronavirus vaccine to COVAX earlier this month.
