Apple Acknowledges That M1 Mac Mini Has a Display Issue

An internal memo from Apple was obtained by MacRumors last week. The memo informed service providers that Apple is aware of, and is currently investigating the issue of “pink squares or pixels” showing up on displays connected to the new M1 Mac Mini.

The said issue has been reported numerous times by users on Apple Support Communities, Reddit, and several other forums ever since the new Mac Mini released in November last year. However, the cause of the issue still remains unknown. Although based on a majority of users’ comments, it appears that the issue is more common when connecting displays via HDMI compared to Thunderbolt.

Apple has not given an official timeframe for a fix. The internal memo was issued by Apple on February 9, around a week after the release of the macOS Big Sur 11.2.1, which does not resolve the issue. However, it is possible that a fix could be readied for the next upcoming patch called macOS Big Sur 11.3, which Apple has reportedly been working on since February 2.

In the meantime, Apple has provided its users with a temporary workaround to troubleshoot the issue.

  • Put the Mac mini to sleep
  • Wait two minutes and wake the Mac mini
  • Unplug the display from the Mac mini, and then plug the display back in
  • Adjust the display’s resolution in System Preferences > Displays

If the issue persists, Apple recommends repeating the steps until its resolved.
