Tabish Khan Took Most First-class Wickets Among Asian Teams Before His Test Debut

Tabish Khan’s 18-year long wait for an international cap came to an end as he was handed a Test debut in the second Test match between Pakistan and Zimbabwe. The veteran fast bowler became the third oldest Test debutant for Pakistan and is the 245th player to represent the country in Test cricket.

During his 18-year first-class career, Tabish picked up 598 scalps, the most by any player before a Test debut for an Asian team. Previously, Sri Lankan fast bowler, Malinda Pushpakumara had taken 558 wickets before making his international debut against India in 2017.

Overall, Tabish’s 598 first-class wickets are the second most for a player before making their Test debut, Irish bowler, Tim Murtagh, had claimed 712 first-class wickets before making his debut for Ireland in 2018, their first Test match ever.

Tabish played 137 first-class matches before being handed a Test cap, only former Pakistani all-rounder, Khalid ‘Billy’ Ibadulla made more first-class appearances than Tabish before making a Test debut, he played 218 matches before being handed a Test cap.

An almost teary-eyed Tabish received the Test cap from Pakistan head coach, Misbah-ul-Haq, showcasing the importance of a national Test jersey for a cricketer. Tabish will be raring to go at Zimbabwean batting line-up and will be hoping to get his Test career off to a magnificent start.
