This was Kohli’s ninth duck and third golden duck of his Test career, which is the most for an Indian captain in Test history. Previously, the record was held by the former captain, MS Dhoni, who had been dismissed for a duck eight times in his career.

Here are the Indian captains with the most number of ducks:

Captain Matches Ducks
Virat Kohli 62* 9
MS Dhoni 60 8
MAK Pataudi 40 7
Kapil Dev 34 6

Kohli’s recent poor form has been a worrisome sign for India. He has only scored 229 runs at an average of 25.44 in 9 Test innings in 2021.

The 32-year old was dismissed by the veteran English fast-bowler, James Anderson, for a golden duck as England staged a comeback in the second innings of the opening Test. This was Kohli’s second consecutive duck against England in England.

Kohli’s dismissal left India in a difficult position as they finished the day on 125/4 despite a solid start of 97/0. Earlier in the Test match, England was dismissed for 183 in the first innings, with Indian pace bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, picking up four wickets.
