ICC Makes Changes to Playing Conditions for 2021 T20 World Cup

International Cricket Council (ICC) has revised some playing conditions for the upcoming 2021 T20 World Cup in Oman and UAE. There have been changes made to the Decision Review System (DRS), drinks break has been added during each innings, and rules for rain-affected matches have also been revised.

The 2021 T20 World Cup will be the first in history to have DRS. Each team will have two reviews available in each innings of the match and the review will only be lost when there is an unsuccessful review.

There will also be a drinks break at the midway point of each innings in the match. The break will be of 2 minutes and 30 seconds with the teams getting a chance to strategize by having a talk with their management. However, no practice will be allowed during the drinks break. The drinks break is similar to a ‘Strategic Time-out’ used in various franchise T20 leagues around the world.

If the match is reduced to 14 overs or less, there will be no drinks break in the entire match. In case there is a lengthy break or interruption before the first drinks break of the match then the match referee will make the call whether to have the drinks break during the match or not.

The playing conditions for rain-affected matches have also been revised by the ICC.

“To constitute a match, a minimum of 5 overs have to be bowled to the team batting second subject to a result not being achieved earlier. For the semi-finals and final, a minimum of 10 overs have to be bowled to the side batting second, subject to a result not being achieved earlier,” the new condition stated.

ICC has also revealed that Super Over will be played in case the match ends in a tie. If the Super Over is also tied then more Super Overs will be played until there is a winner.

“Unless exceptional circumstances arise, there shall be an unlimited number of Super Overs played to achieve a result,” the rule stated.

If the semi-final is abandoned or cannot be played due to any reason then the team finishing higher in the Super 12s stage will progress to the final of the competition, However, if the final of the mega event cannot be played due to any reason, then the two finalists will be announced as joint-winners. Both semi-finals and the final will also have reserve days.
