NUST to Get Pakistan’s First-Ever 5G Research Lab With Jazz’s Collaboration

The National University of Science and Technology (NUST) has started the development of Pakistan’s first 5G Innovation Lab, a research platform, powered by the country’s leading telecom operator Jazz in collaboration with Huawei.

The lab will study the use of 5G from a socio-economic perspective in order to address issues related to education, health, mobility, and businesses.

As per the reports, NUST will set up the Innovation Lab in collaboration with Jazz and Huawei Technologies. The research project will enable academics to study 5G’s use in artificial intelligence (AI), augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and the above-mentioned fields.

By leveraging its high bandwidth, low latency, and advanced security, the 5G Innovation Lab will help researchers to work on potential use cases for 5G in the fields of Artificial Intelligence, Augmented/Virtual Reality and hi, healthcare, Industry 4.0, agriculture, security, disaster management, entertainment, and the public sector.

The Federal Secretary for Information Technology and Telecom, Mohsin Mushtaq, performed the groundbreaking of the research lab and stated that the lab will help us develop an environment to study the use of 5G in several fields, including AgriTech, Edtech, etc.

Federal Secretary, Mohsin Mushtaq, was accompanied by PM’s Special Assistant on Youth Affairs, Shiza Fatima Khawaja, Member Finance PTA, Muhammad Naveed, CEO VEON Group, Kaan Terzioğlu, Co-Founder Veon, Augie K Fabela, CEO, Jazz, Aamir Ibrahim, along with other key ICT industry stakeholders.

During the ceremony, the speakers stressed that 5G will be used to accelerate the digitization of other industries unlike 4G, which is used for calls and the internet only.

Congratulating Jazz, Mr. Mohsin Mushtaq, MoITT Secretary said, “This lab will play a pivotal role in helping us build an ecosystem to explore 5G-enabled use cases in Agritech, EdTech etc. while serving as a conduit for the interplay of technologies like Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning, Internet of Things, and Cybersecurity.

In his address, the CEO of VEON Group, Kaan Terzioglu, remarked, “While our priority is to provide 4G for all, we must also look at the future of communications where 5G will have an important role to play. Jazz is making a major commitment towards innovation in the country and exploring the potential of 5G to help transform business and society. We set out to empower our customers while enhancing the prosperity of the countries we operate in, and Jazz’s 5G innovation lab aims to deliver both in Pakistan.”

During the ceremony, CEO Jazz, Aamir Ibrahim, said that Jazz in 2020 led the 5G tests in a controlled environment, and added that today going a step further by setting up Pakistan’s first 5G Innovation Lab in partnetship with NUST. This joint effort will help researchers, entrepreneurs, and the academia , to better understand the opportunities, value and usefulness of 5G spearheading the implementation of use cases for co-innovation ecosystem development, he noted.
