Rizwan Makes An Unwanted Record In 2024 T20 World Cup

Mohammad Rizwan etched his name into the record books by scoring the slowest fifty in T20 World Cup history. Playing against Canada in the 2024 T20 World Cup, Rizwan reached his half-century off 52 balls while chasing a target of 107, surpassing the previous record held by South Africa’s David Miller, who made his half-century in 50 balls.

Rizwan’s painstakingly slow innings came as Pakistan aimed to chase down a 107-run target at the Nassau Cricket County venue in New York. Despite the sluggish pace, his fifty was the first for Pakistan in this year’s World Cup and the third overall fifty scored at this venue.

The match was characterized by Rizwan’s struggle to find fluency against a disciplined Canadian bowling attack. His 52-ball fifty included only 2 boundaries and a maximum, highlighting the difficulty he faced in rotating the strike and finding gaps in the field.

While his innings provided some stability in Pakistan’s batting lineup, it was also a source of frustration for Pakistani fans who wanted the team to chase the total before 17.3 overs. Rizwan’s knock drew mixed reactions, with some applauding his resilience on a difficult pitch and others criticizing the lack of intent and aggression.

The bowling attack of the Men in Green was firing on all cylinders in the first innings, as both Haris Rauf and Mohammad Amir picked up 2 wickets to restrict Canada to 106-7.

Naseem Shah and Shaheen Afridi also picked up a wicket apiece with economical bowling spells to dismantle Canada’s batting line-up in New York.

Pakistan defeated Canada by 7 wickets while gaining 2 crucial points on the table, their last match is a must-win game as well that will be held on June 16 against Ireland at Lauderhill, Florida.

Slowest fifty in Men’s T20 World Cup history:

Mohammad Rizwan Half-century (52 balls)
David Miller Half-century (50 balls)
