Kuwait Makes It Easier to Get Family Visas

Expatriates residing in Kuwait can now breathe a sigh of relief as the Ministry of Interior recently announced a significant change to its family visa program, eliminating the previous requirement for applicants to hold a university degree.

This welcome update simplifies the process for many families, allowing expatriates to reunite with their spouses and children under 18 in Kuwait.

What is a Family Visa?

A family visa in Kuwait permits expatriates with a valid work permit to sponsor their dependents for residency. This typically includes spouses and children under the age of 18, allowing them to live in Kuwait, enjoy certain social benefits, and potentially pursue educational opportunities.

Previously Stringent Requirements Relaxed

Securing a family visa in Kuwait used to involve stricter criteria. In addition to a minimum salary threshold, applicants needed a university degree, posing a challenge for many expatriates working in skilled trades or other professions that may not require college education.

New Eased Requirements

The recent changes are part of the broader adjustments introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 56/2024. Key changes include:

  • Salary Requirement: The minimum salary requirement has been raised to KD800 (approximately Dh9,600).
  • Educational Qualifications: The previous requirement for applicants to hold university degrees has been abolished.
  • Professional Alignment: Applicants’ professions within Kuwait must align with their academic credentials.

Policy Change Driven by Leadership

This new directive follows an order issued last January by Sheikh Fahad Al Yousuf Al Sabah, the First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior and Defense. The directive called for residency affairs departments across various governorates to implement new controls and conditions for processing family visa applications.

Looking to Apply for a Family Visa in Kuwait?

While the university degree requirement is no longer in effect, it’s crucial to stay updated on the latest regulations. Contacting the Kuwaiti Ministry of Interior or a reputable immigration consultant is recommended for the most current information and application guidance.
