India’s Olympics Funding is More Than Pakistan’s Entire Sports Budget

With the 2024 Paris Olympics right around the corner, Pakistan is going with just seven athletes and minimal funding, while India, on the other hand, announced its largest-ever Olympic contingent, with 117 athletes competing in 16 sports disciplines, supported by an unprecedented funding allocation of over 470 Crore rupees.

This stark contrast underscores the disparities in sports investment between the two nations. India’s 2024 Paris Olympics team, consisting of 70 men and 47 women, will vie for medals in 69 events, while Pakistan is relying heavily on star javelin thrower Arshad Nadeem to secure a medal.  Public data, excluding ad-hoc funding or provincial contributions, reveals a significant disparity between India and Pakistan for the Olympics.

India’s comprehensive approach to sports funding and support has fostered a competitive environment that prioritizes athletes’ development. The Indian sports ecosystem, with the motto “Athlete-First,” includes the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS), the Sports Authority of India (SAI), the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), and various National Sports Federations (NSFs). These bodies work collaboratively to ensure that athletes receive the necessary support, allowing them to focus solely on training and competition.

The contrast is highlighted by Pakistan’s Olympic participation—just seven athletes compared to India’s 117. This limited representation is a symptom of broader challenges within Pakistan’s sports infrastructure, where inadequate funding and support have hindered athlete development.

Winning Olympic medals requires substantial investment and meticulous planning. To nurture and develop talent, Pakistan must build a supportive environment that provides the necessary resources and infrastructure for athletes to succeed on the global stage.

If Pakistan aims to see more medals and success stories, a concerted effort to improve funding, infrastructure, and support for athletes is essential.
