‘Remember The Name’: Belal Muhammad Makes History as First Palestinian UFC Champion

Belal “Remember the Name” Muhammad has made history by becoming the first mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter of Palestinian background to win a UFC title. He captured the welterweight crown from English champion Leon “Rocky” Edwards at UFC 304 in Manchester, England, in a stunning upset.

The 36-year-old fighter, born in Chicago to Palestinian immigrant parents, secured a five-round unanimous decision victory with scores of 48-47, 48-47, and 49-46. Muhammad’s victory shocked the MMA world as he defeated Edwards on his home soil, breaking the Briton’s 12-fight win streak and deflating the atmosphere at the Co-op Live arena.

Belal Muhammad dominated the UFC bout through superior grappling skills, which ultimately swayed the judges in his favor. The victory was particularly significant given that a 2021 bout between the two was stopped and ruled a no-contest following an accidental eye poke from Edwards.

Bloodied but triumphant, Belal Muhammad (24-3) fell to his knees in disbelief as he clinched his 11th consecutive fight without a loss since 2019. The championship belt was ceremoniously wrapped around his waist, marking a pinnacle achievement in his career.

Muhammad has been vocal about his heritage and the cause he represents, often expressing that his fights are not just personal achievements but are also for the Palestinian people. “It’s not just about myself, it’s about them [Palestinians and the people in Gaza]” Muhammad stated before the fight. He has proudly waved the Palestinian flag and used his platform to criticize the Israeli actions in Gaza.

The reaction to Muhammad’s victory was mixed. Amid boos from the English crowd, UFC President Dana White appeared disinterested in Muhammad’s historic achievement, having shown clear favoritism towards Leon Edwards. The post-match interview also saw former UFC champion and commentator Daniel Cormier commit a gaffe by mistakenly naming Edwards as the new champion, which quickly went viral and drew ridicule from fans.

Belal Muhammad has consistently highlighted his Palestinian background, often walking out to the song “Dammi Falesteeni (My Blood is Palestine)” by Arab Idol winner Mohammed Assaf. He has emphasized the importance of using his platform to give a voice to Palestinians, stating,

There aren’t a lot of Palestinian athletes that have a stage or platform where they can carry the flag. And now, especially during these times, I need to carry that flag higher than ever. To show the world that we do exist, that we are a country, and there are real people there.

With his victory, Muhammad hopes to continue shining a light on the struggles of Palestinians, raising awareness, and using his newfound prominence to support those who are often forgotten.
