An alarming incident involving an online taxi driver has been reported in Lahore’s Sabzazar area. According to Sabzazar police, the incident took place near Karachi Pulley. The driver had completed a ride, dropping off two women at their home.
However, after completing the drop-off, the driver allegedly followed the women into their home and proceeded to assault one of them.
In response to the victim’s complaint, the police have registered a case. The woman was able to provide the vehicle’s number, which is aiding the ongoing investigation.
Recently, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz announced a plan to enhance online cab services and improve safety across the province.
In a meeting with representatives from an online cab service provider, she emphasized the importance of better regulations and technology to benefit both service providers and users. She highlighted the need for new rules to improve ride-hailing services and discussed linking the Women Safety App with online ride-hailing companies to increase safety for female riders.
The Chief Minister also focused on creating better employment opportunities for youth and women and stressed the mandatory use of safety gear by bike riders.
Moreover, she discussed plans to expand the free Wi-Fi project beyond Lahore and Kasur to facilitate easier access to online transportation services, particularly for women.
Maryam Nawaz reaffirmed the Punjab government’s commitment to supporting initiatives that boost business activities and create job opportunities, stating, “We will encourage every initiative that promotes business activity and creates employment.”
