Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has stepped down and departed from Dhaka due to violent clashes, according to a source close to the leader who spoke to AFP.
According to the source, Sheikh Hasina and her sister have vacated Ganabhaban, the Prime Minister’s official residence, and moved to a safer location. The source added that Hasina had intended to record a speech but was unable to do so.
This development follows the announcement that Bangladesh’s army chief, Waker-Uz-Zaman, is preparing to address the nation. The announcement comes after violent clashes on the previous day resulted in 98 deaths, marking the deadliest incident in weeks of ongoing anti-government protests.
Earlier, the local media in Bangladesh reported that thousands of people entered Sheikh Hasina’s official residence. The protests, which initially started last month over issues related to government job quotas, have escalated into widespread unrest across the country.
