Sri Lanka Clinches Historic ODI Series Triumph Over India

In a momentous achievement, Sri Lanka secured their first ODI series victory over India since 1997 by defeating Rohit Sharma’s side by 110 runs in the third and final match in Colombo on Wednesday.

The hosts claimed the series 2-0, following a draw in the opening game and a narrow 32-run win in the second ODI of the series.

In the decisive match, India faced a daunting target of 249 runs set by Sri Lanka, but their batting lineup crumbled, managing only 138 runs in 26.1 overs.

Rohit Sharma, the Indian captain, was the top scorer for his team with a quick 35 off 20 balls, but his efforts were in vain as wickets fell rapidly around him.

Veteran batsman Virat Kohli also struggled, contributing a modest 20 runs off 18 balls before being dismissed. Sharma’s departure triggered a collapse in the middle order, with Rishabh Pant (6), Shreyas Iyer (8), and Axar Patel (2) failing to withstand Sri Lanka’s spin attack.

Washington Sundar provided some resistance, scoring 30 runs off 25 balls, but it was not enough to steer India to victory. The team was eventually bowled out for 138, with Kuldeep Yadav falling on the first ball of the 27th over, sealing Sri Lanka’s historic win.

Sri Lanka’s bowling was spearheaded by Dunith Wellalage, who took five wickets, while Jeffrey Vandersay chipped in with two crucial dismissals.

Earlier in the match, Sri Lanka posted a competitive total of 248 for seven in their allotted 50 overs. The innings was anchored by the opening partnership between Pathum Nissanka and Avishka Fernando, who added 89 runs in 19.4 overs.

Nissanka was dismissed for 45 off 65 balls, while Fernando narrowly missed out on a century, scoring an impressive 95 off 102 deliveries.

Kusal Mendis then stepped up, adding 59 runs to the total, supported by Kamindu Mendis’ 23 runs in the later stages, helping Sri Lanka set a formidable target.

This series win marks a significant achievement for Sri Lanka, highlighting their resurgence in international cricket and demonstrating their ability to compete against top-tier teams like India.
