Nissan Invents New Paint That Can Make Your Car Cooler in Extreme Heat

Nissan has teamed up with Radi-Cool, a company known for radiative cooling products, to create a new type of automotive paint that can help reduce heat. Early tests have shown that this innovative paint can lower interior temperatures by up to 9 degrees Fahrenheit and exterior temperatures by nearly 22 degrees Fahrenheit.

This new paint technology could improve vehicle efficiency by reducing the energy needed to cool the cabin. On hot days, cooling the car interior usually requires running the air-conditioning for an extended period, which puts extra strain on the vehicle’s power system. This is especially noticeable in electric vehicles, where the climate control system can significantly impact the vehicle’s range.

Nissan has been testing this paint at Tokyo International Air Terminal at Haneda Airport since November 2023. The airport is an ideal testing site since vehicles there are often exposed to intense sunlight for long periods. Compared to cars with standard paint, those coated with the cool paint showed significant reductions in both interior and exterior temperatures.

The cooling effect is achieved through a metamaterial in the paint that contains two types of microstructure particles. One type reflects near-infrared rays from sunlight, which typically generate heat, while the other redirects these rays back into the atmosphere as electromagnetic waves. Nissan hasn’t provided detailed information on this process, likely due to proprietary reasons.

While the results are promising, further development is needed before this technology can be used in production vehicles. The current version of the paint is 120 microns thick, which is six times thicker than regular automotive paint. Additionally, the team is working on creating more color options beyond the initial white, as not everyone prefers white vehicles.

Initially, Nissan plans to use this cool paint for commercial vehicles like delivery vans and long-distance trucks. However, it could eventually be available for regular passenger cars.

  • Super invention, this can only be done by Japan, Muslim countries do not have time for R&D rather pulling legs of each other.
