The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has appointed former Olympian Tahir Zaman as the head coach. This announcement was made by PHF Secretary General Rana Mujahid Ali during a press conference, where he outlined significant updates concerning the national team.
Tahir Zaman, a celebrated figure in Pakistan’s hockey history, is set to join the national squad in China imminently as they prepare for the upcoming Asian Champions Trophy. Rana Mujahid expressed his gratitude to Zaman for accepting the role during a critical period for Pakistan hockey. He also mentioned that discussions regarding a long-term contract with Zaman will be pursued after the tournament.
The PHF had been in talks with Dutch coach Roland Oltmans to lead the team, but negotiations did not result in an agreement. Despite this setback, the federation remains committed to hiring a foreign coach in the future to enhance the team’s capabilities and performance on the international stage.
PHF President Tariq Bugti is scheduled to meet with former hockey Olympians to solicit their suggestions on reviving the national sport. Rana Mujahid emphasized the importance of involving Pakistan’s hockey legends in these discussions, highlighting that their insights will be instrumental in shaping the future of hockey in the country.
In addition to the coaching appointment, Rana Mujahid announced that the National Junior Hockey Championship will take place at the end of the month, with support from the Rawalpindi Commissioner.
Rana Mujahid also addressed rumors regarding funding issues involving the PHF President and Secretary, categorically dismissing them as false. He warned that legal action would be taken against those responsible for disseminating fabricated documents, underscoring the federation’s commitment to transparency and integrity.
