Pakistan’s campaign in the Asian Hockey Champions Trophy remains on shaky ground after back-to-back 2-2 draws, first against Malaysia and now South Korea.
The latest match, played in Hulunbuir, China, saw Pakistan lose a late lead once again, leaving fans frustrated as South Korea scored in the dying minutes.
South Korea initially gained control, taking a 1-0 lead, but Pakistan responded quickly in the fourth quarter. Hanan Shahid turned the game around with two well-taken goals, pushing Pakistan into a 2-1 lead.
However, just when victory seemed near, South Korea snatched an equalizer in the final moments, denying Pakistan a much-needed win in the Asian Hockey Champions Trophy.
Pakistan’s inability to capitalize on several scoring opportunities continues to be their Achilles heel. In both matches, they squandered chances, including over six penalty corners in their first clash against Malaysia.
Despite these shortcomings, captain Imran Shaikh Butt was named Player of the Match in the game against Malaysia, highlighting his leadership on the field.
Elsewhere in the tournament, India dominated China with a 3-0 win, while South Korea and Japan played out an intense 5-5 draw. Pakistan’s next challenge will be South Korea on September 9, followed by matches against Japan, China, and a high-stakes encounter with rivals India on September 14.
The tournament’s round-robin format will see the top four teams advancing to the semi-finals, and Pakistan must now fight hard to secure their spot.
