Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) abruptly postponed the National U-19 Inter-region Cricket Tournament, on the day of the opening match of the season.
The three-day matches, which featured 18 teams from across the country, were postponed after the first day of play. The apex cricket board attributed the decision to “unavoidable circumstances” but did not offer further clarification behind the decision.
Sources suggest that the postponement was driven by PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi’s dissatisfaction with the player selection process.
The selection had been conducted by regional coaches, and overseen by a panel that included PCB representatives. An internal audit had also reviewed the process, but complaints reportedly reached the chairman, prompting the sudden move.
This abrupt decision has sparked widespread disappointment among players and officials, who had already undergone extensive training camps and participated in one full day of play.
“It’s disheartening to see all the preparation and resources go to waste,” one official lamented. Millions of rupees had been invested in organizing the event, including accommodation, transport, and daily allowances for the teams.
In light of this development, the women’s U-19 tournament, slated for September 16, has also been postponed. The fate of the upcoming Inter-District Senior cricket tournament remains uncertain.
The postponement has raised questions about PCB’s internal management and the impact on future domestic cricket plans.
