Senator Rubina Khalid, Chairperson of the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), announced on Thursday that the number of families benefiting from BISP will increase to 10 million by the end of this year.
She thanked Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for raising BISP’s financial budget, which will lead to an increase in the quarterly Benazir Kafaalat installment from 10,500 rupees to 13,500 rupees starting in January 2025.
Speaking to the media at the BISP zonal office in Gilgit, Senator Rubina Khalid explained that the registration of deserving families is ongoing through Dynamic Registration Centers across the country. Additionally, re-certification of already registered families is underway to reassess their socio-economic conditions.
She also highlighted the forthcoming launch of the Benazir Skill Training Program, designed to provide skill development opportunities for deserving women and their families. The program will offer training aligned with local and international standards, helping beneficiaries secure employment. This initiative aims to improve the quality of life for deserving families, empower them economically, and create room for new families to join the program.
Senator Rubina Khalid emphasized that BISP, like other global social safety programs, offers additional financial support to help vulnerable families manage their daily expenses. She noted that BISP is part of the vision of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto and was implemented by President Asif Ali Zardari. As per the program’s guidelines, financial assistance is provided to female members of eligible families, giving poor women in Pakistan both recognition and economic empowerment.
She also discussed the Benazir Taleemi Wazaif initiative, which provides educational scholarships to children from deserving families, contingent on 70% school attendance, with larger financial incentives for girls. Additionally, the Benazir Nashonuma program offers financial assistance and nutritious food to pregnant and lactating mothers, as well as children up to two years old, to combat stunting.
During her visit to the BISP Gilgit office, Senator Rubina Khalid met with deserving women, listened to their concerns, and directed the BISP staff to address their issues promptly. She also participated in a tree-planting drive by planting a sapling at the BISP office in Gilgit
