Chaos ensued during the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) match between Antigua and Barbuda Falcons and Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) in Port of Spain, as an LBW decision involving Falcons batter Imad Wasim led to controversy and a lengthy 12-minute delay.
The controversy erupted on the second ball of the tenth over during the Falcons’ chase. After Sunil Narine had dismissed Hassan Khan for 36, the Falcons needed 67 runs off 65 balls. Pakistan all-rounder Imad Wasim, facing his first delivery, attempted a forward defensive shot but was struck on the pads by a ball from Narine that pitched on a good length. The on-field umpire, Christopher Taylor, initially ruled the appeal as not out. However, Narine, confident of the dismissal, urged TKR captain Kieron Pollard to review the decision.
Upon review, ball-tracking technology indicated that the ball would have hit the leg stump, suggesting a golden duck for Imad Wasim. However, he was adamant that he had edged the ball before it hit his pad. As replays on the big screen appeared to support Imad Wasim’s claim of an inside edge, he engaged in discussions with the umpires and began to walk off the field, only to be called back.
The third umpire, Nigel Duguid, initially overturned the not-out decision, but after further review, the decision was reverted to not-out, acknowledging the inside edge. This reversal sparked animated discussions between Pollard and the on-field umpires, with TKR coach Phil Simmons also signaling his discontent from the dugout. The incident caused a nearly 12-minute delay, with visible frustration from the TKR camp.
Despite the CPL controversy, Imad Wasim went on to hit the winning runs for the Falcons, securing their victory. TKR, although still second on the points table, has yet to secure a playoff spot. A visibly upset Pollard kept his comments brief during the post-match presentation, stating, “If I speak, I’ll get into trouble. So I better stay quiet on that.”
Falcons captain Chris Green described the situation as “chaos, absolute chaos,” expressing confusion over the sequence of events.
“He was given out when he shouldn’t have been, and then he stood over the rope and he probably shouldn’t have – but he was told to. Absolute chaos,” Green remarked. Despite the tumultuous incident, Green was pleased with his team’s performance, stating, “We outplayed them in all facets of the game tonight, and we thoroughly deserve that win.”
