The three-month relief period for both protected and non-protected electricity consumers utilizing less than 200 units per month is set to expire on September 30.
The government had announced a subsidy of Rs. 50 billion for lifeline consumers for the months of July, August and September.
The package provided relief of up to Rs. 7 per unit to around 25 million domestic consumers falling in the protected category till September.
For protected customers using up to 200 units, the tariff increase will be:
- 1-100 units: Rs. 3.95 per unit increase
- 101-200 units: Rs. 4.1 per unit increase
For the non-protected class using up to 200 units, the tariff hike will be:
- 1-100 units: Rs. 7.11 per unit increase
- 101-200 units: Rs. 7.12 per unit increase
However, lifeline consumers using up to 50 units per month would see their tariff remain at Rs. 3.95 per unit, and those using 51 to 100 units per month would continue to pay Rs. 7.74 per unit.

I feel agitated on reading such news items. What relief and who received it? I did not. And what does the relief for three months mean? Why for only three months? Those who were protesting a few weeks ago against electricity bills have done more damage than good to the whole thing. The government has become more bold after their protests and has started squeezing blood out of the citizens as usual.
No party is interested in the people’s welfare. Every party has its own agenda and the final goal is power and ‘chair’. Vote anyone into power, you will face the same sufferings.

200 units limit represents the mediocre mentality of govt and the relevant department. They are so outdated they can’t even realise we are living in 2024 and basic necessities increase decades ago and electricity consumption naturally increased to fulfil the daily life needs. We are paying every day for present and past government’s incompetency.
Excellent relief
