The Pakistani duo of Ashab Irfan and Asim Khan have made a roaring start to their campaign at the 2024 Charlottesville Open Squash Championship, with both players securing victories in each of their first-round matches.
Ashab Irfan managed a dominating victory over Guatemala’s Alejandro Enríquez, winning 3-0 in straight games. He stayed on top with scores of 11-6, 12-10, and 11-4, advancing to the next round.
His compatriot; Asim Khan, mounted an impressive comeback after losing the first two games to Brazil’s Diego Gobbi. Despite dropping the initial games 5-11 and 9-11, Asim fought back to claim the next three with identical scores of 11-8, securing the victory with an overall score of 3-2.
The second round now beckons, where Asim will face world No. 45 Yahya El Nawassany of Egypt, while Ashab will go up against Egypt’s Ibrahim Elkabbani.
Quite a few top-ranked international players are at the event, with the total prize pool for the Charlottesville Open standing at $28,750.
Asim Khan has already clinched quite a few titles this year, winning the Wild Card Challenger in Washington and the Squash Inspire Challenger in March.
Khan also managed to win the Jones Creek Open Squash Championship title in the USA, defeating Ashab Irfan by a score of 3-1 in an all-Pakistani final, picking up a neat $12,000 in the process.
