Hyundai Unveils Initium Hydrogen Fuel Cell SUV to Launch Next Year

Hyundai Motor Co. recently unveiled Initium, its latest hydrogen-powered SUV, which will be available in the first half of next year. With a range of 404 miles per refill, the Initium offers more distance than Hyundai’s earlier hydrogen model, the Nexo.

Initium can also connect to household electricity supplies, serving as a backup power source when required. It can generate enough power to run a home in Korea for around 10 days.

Initium represents Hyundai’s commitment to hydrogen energy. The company plans to invest $4 billion over the next ten years to promote hydrogen as a clean fuel. Hyundai aims to reach net-zero emissions by 2045 and sees hydrogen as central to this goal.

CEO Jaehoon Chang highlighted Hyundai’s focus on creating a “hydrogen ecosystem.” Hyundai’s goal is to make hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) a common part of daily life.

Technology and Design

Initium uses Hyundai’s third-generation fuel cell stack, which improves power density and durability. Its 0-100 km/h acceleration time has been reduced to eight seconds. Hyundai also aims to support drivers with a hydrogen-specific route planner to address range concerns.

The SUV features a rugged, “Art of Steel” design, which Hyundai says reflects strength and durability. The design integrates Hyundai’s signature parametric pixel lights and rugged accents, aiming for urban and outdoor appeal.

Hyundai believes hydrogen is especially suited for heavy-duty vehicles due to its higher storage density and range advantages. Initium is meant to be the “flagship” vehicle that showcases Hyundai’s vision of hydrogen-powered mobility.

Hydrogen vehicles currently represent a small part of Hyundai’s sales. From January to September, around 2,400 hydrogen units were sold in Korea, compared to nearly 31,000 battery EVs. Despite this, Hyundai sees a future for hydrogen-powered cars, especially as infrastructure improves.
