The Environmental Protection Department has installed Pakistan’s first anti-smog tower in Lahore to tackle increasing air pollution. Developed in partnership with a private company, the tower marks a significant step in improving the city’s air quality.
Situated in Mehmood Booti, the tower can filter 50,000 cubic metres of air every hour and purify 1.2 million cubic metres daily. It operates using electrostatic technology to attract and eliminate harmful pollutants from the atmosphere. The structure was manufactured locally by an Islamabad-based company.
Imran Hamid Sheikh, Director General of the Environment Department, explained that industrial emissions and waste dumping sites are major contributors to pollution in the area. He emphasized the necessity of such initiatives to curb harmful air quality levels.
The Punjab government is conducting a 15-day trial of the tower at no expense, according to officials. If the results prove effective, additional towers will be installed in other parts of Lahore to extend the project’s impact.
This trial could pave the way for innovative solutions to the growing smog issue in urban centres across Pakistan.
