Ex-World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen Disqualified for Wearing Jeans

In an unexpected turn of events, former World Chess Champion and top-ranked player Magnus Carlsen was disqualified from the 2024 World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships due to a breach of the tournament’s strict dress code regulations.

The International Chess Federation (FIDE) cited Magnus Carlsen’s failure to comply with the tournament’s dress code as the reason for the disqualification. According to FIDE, the regulations are in place to ensureprofessionalism and fairness for all participants, and they took action when Carlsen appeared in attire deemed unsuitable for the prestigious event.

The governing body imposed a $200 fine on Carlsen and offered him the opportunity to change into the correct attire. However, the 34-year-old rejected the offer.

In an interview, the Norwegian explained that he had been in a rush after a lunch meeting before the round and had not paid attention to his outfit.I put on a shirt, and jacket, and honestly didn’t even think about the jeans, even changed my shoes,Carlsen said, explaining his oversight.

“I didn’t even think about it. First of all, I got a fine, which is fine, and then I got a warning that I wouldn’t be paired if I didn’t change my clothes,he continued. They said I could do it after the third round, but I said I’d change tomorrow if that’s okay. I didn’t realize it today, but they insisted I change now.”

At that point, Magnus Carlsen said the situation became a matter of principle.I said,Well, I guess it’s fine by me,but I wasn’t going to back down, and that’s where we are.”

Despite the disqualification, Carlsen made it clear he would not be appealing the decision.Honestly, I’m too old at this point to care too much,he remarked. If this is what they want to do, I guess it goes both ways. Nobody wants to back down, and now we’re here. It’s fine by me.”
