This Feature Sends Your Personal Photos to Apple Without Consent

An alarming privacy concern has emerged in Apple’s latest operating systems, contradicting the tech giant’s long-standing commitment to user data protection and end-to-end encryption.

Developer Jeff Johnson has uncovered that iOS 18 and macOS 15 Sequoia automatically share users’ photo information with Apple servers, raising eyebrows among privacy advocates. Although you can turn this feature off, it is enabled by default on all devices.

The feature behind this privacy issue is Enhanced Visual Search, which operates in a complex manner behind the scenes. First launched with iOS 15, it automatically scans photos of objects and landmarks, transmitting this data to Apple’s servers without explicit user consent.

While Enhanced Visual Search promises to improve photo organization by identifying landmarks and providing a better context within the Photos app, its default-enabled status contradicts Apple’s celebrated stance on privacy.

According to Johnson’s detailed analysis, the controversial feature functions through a two-tier system. The process begins with machine learning algorithms scanning images, followed by the creation of “vector embeddings” – complex digital fingerprints that capture the unique characteristics of landmarks and objects within users’ photos. This data is then sent to Apple for processing.

While the technology showcases impressive capabilities, privacy concerns loom large as Apple reportedly collects this data without explicit user consent, potentially creating vulnerabilities for the tech giant and its customers. Users concerned about privacy can disable this feature by going to: Settings > Apps > Photos > Disable Enhanced Visual Search.

Apple is yet to respond with any official statements on the matter.
