In a lopsided encounter of the ILT20, Fakhar Zaman delivered a scintillating performance, smashing an unbeaten 71 off just 39 balls to lead the Desert Vipers to a commanding 10-wicket victory over the Sharjah Warriorz. Chasing a modest target of 92, the Vipers wrapped up the match with 10 overs to spare, leaving the Warriorz reeling from a dismal batting collapse earlier in the game.
Batting first, the Sharjah Warriorz endured a nightmare start, with Mohammad Amir striking twice in the very first over. Johnson Charles (4) and Avishka Fernando (0) fell in quick succession, leaving the Warriorz at a precarious 5/2. Amir wasn’t done yet, adding the wickets of Rohan Mustafa (2) and Adam Milne (4) to complete a sensational four-wicket haul, finishing with figures of 3.1-0-24-4.
Wanindu Hasaranga further compounded the Warriorz’s misery with a masterful spell of 4-0-10-3, dismissing key players Tim Seifert (9), Luke Wells (11), and Ashton Agar (1). Despite Jason Roy’s fighting 30 off 34 balls, the Warriorz folded for a meager 91 in 19.1 overs, struggling against the disciplined Vipers bowling unit.
With just 92 needed for victory, the Desert Vipers came out with intent, and Fakhar Zaman wasted no time asserting his dominance. The left-hander unleashed a barrage of boundaries, hammering seven fours and four sixes to maintain a blistering strike rate of 182.05.
Partnering with Alex Hales, who contributed a composed 23 off 21 balls, Fakhar showcased his full range of shots, including some spectacular strikes over the ropes. The duo’s unbeaten 95-run opening stand (highest in team history) highlighted the gulf in class between the two sides, as the Vipers crossed the finish line in just 10 overs.
This was the first instance in the ILT20 that a team has chased down the target inside 10 overs. Fakhar Zaman’s 71* is now also the highest score by a Desert Vipers batter.
While Fakhar Zaman’s heroics stole the spotlight, the Desert Vipers’ bowlers set the foundation for their emphatic victory. Mohammad Amir’s fiery opening spell and Hasaranga’s spin wizardry dismantled the Warriorz batting lineup, while Sam Curran provided crucial support with figures of 4-0-14-2.
This comprehensive win boosts the Desert Vipers’ confidence as they eye a strong run in the tournament. Fakhar Zaman’s form is particularly encouraging, and his aggressive intent at the top of the order could prove pivotal in the matches to come and earn him a recall to the national side.
