The Punjab government has announced a lifetime ban on theatre actresses found guilty of engaging in obscene performances.
Punjab Minister for Information and Culture, Azma Zahid Bukhari, held a meeting with theatre owners to address ongoing issues and challenges within the sector. During the discussion, it was decided to take strict action against performers and establishments promoting vulgarity.
Key Decisions Announced
The government has resolved to revoke the licenses of theatres that encourage obscenity and has instructed the Punjab Arts Council to secure formal undertakings from theatre owners pledging to avoid obscene performances. The minister stated that theatres previously sealed for such violations would only be reopened once these commitments are submitted.
Azma Zahid Bukhari emphasized that Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif is determined to make theatres family-friendly spaces and prevent the proliferation of vulgar content. She highlighted that upcoming legislation would aim to regulate stage performances and promote dramas that tackle social issues and provide constructive guidance to the public.
Long-Standing Concerns
The decision follows repeated warnings and notices issued to theatres in Lahore that failed to comply with regulations, leading to multiple closures. This is not the first time authorities have taken such action. In 2023, the Punjab caretaker government shut down all theatres in the Lahore division over continued violations involving vulgar dances and obscene acts.
Caretaker Provincial Information Minister Amir Mir had previously noted that the government was compelled to act after repeated warnings were ignored. Now, the provincial administration has taken a firm stance by imposing a lifetime ban on performers involved in such activities.
The Punjab government hopes these measures will restore the cultural integrity of stage performances and ensure a positive theatrical environment for audiences across the province.
