Pakistan’s football future remains in limbo as FIFA has extended the mandate of the Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) Normalisation Committee (NC) until July 31, 2025, at the earliest.
However, the extension comes with a major caveat—the global football body will lift Pakistan’s suspension only if the PFF Congress agrees to FIFA’s proposed constitutional amendments and conducts the long-awaited elections.
FIFA officially announced Pakistan’s suspension on February 6, citing the refusal of the PFF Congress to accept key constitutional amendments designed to ensure fair and democratic elections.
The latest ban marks Pakistan football’s third suspension since 2017, raising further concerns about the sport’s governance in the country. In a letter sent to PFF NC chairman Haroon Malik, FIFA General Secretary Mattias Grafström justified the suspension, stating that certain provisions of the current PFF Constitution—particularly Article 38—severely limit the pool of eligible election candidates.
FIFA had urged amendments to remove these restrictions, but Congress members rejected the proposed changes at their extraordinary meeting last month. According to FIFA’s statutes, member associations must comply with directives from FIFA bodies at all times. The letter further clarified that Pakistan’s suspension will only be lifted if the PFF Congress approves FIFA’s revised constitution, which was introduced in a workshop held in Lahore on November 18, 2024.
Despite the suspension, FIFA has decided to continue the normalization process to avoid a power vacuum, ensuring daily operations of the Pakistan Football Federation are maintained. However, the extended mandate of the NC is dependent on whether Pakistan complies with the governing body’s demands.
The PFF NC released a statement on Friday, confirming that it was actively working to negotiate a solution with Congress members. Meanwhile, NC chairman Haroon Malik has sought the government’s intervention to persuade Congress members to accept the amendments.
With Pakistan already suspended, the ongoing standoff between FIFA, the NC, and the PFF Congress further jeopardizes the country’s football future. Unless a breakthrough is reached, the nation’s footballers, clubs, and fans will remain sidelined from international competition.
