Pakistan’s cricket team could be in for a significant blow off the field, with reports suggesting that Fakhar Zaman, Pakistan’s aggressive opening batsman, is planning his retirement from One Day International (ODI) cricket following the conclusion of the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
The 34-year-old left-handed batter, who has represented Pakistan in 86 ODI matches, is said to have privately discussed his retirement plans with close associates in recent weeks, according to journalist Qadir Khawaja.
Fakhar, who was recently ruled out of the 2025 Champions Trophy, has battled health concerns in recent years, which may be influencing his reported decision to retire. The left-hander is currently battling hyperthyroidism and has been advised by doctors to rest for approximately two and a half months.
His ongoing health struggles, coupled with a recent injury that ruled him out of the Champions Trophy, have compounded a frustrating period for the veteran opener. Beyond his health concerns, Zaman has reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with certain selection matters, particularly regarding the issuance of No-Objection Certificates (NOCs) for participation in cricket leagues. This dissatisfaction, combined with his personal health challenges, has reportedly led him to contemplate broader life changes, including giving up ODI cricket.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has yet to issue an official statement on Fakhar’s reported plans to retire from ODI cricket. However, sources close to the player suggest that this may mark the end of his international career in the 50-over format.
Pakistan’s disappointing early exit from the ICC Champions Trophy also opened a door for Fakhar Zaman’s retirement. The team, which entered the tournament as both the host nation and defending champions, failed to make it past the group stage.
The international team is likely heading for a revamp after this latest setback, and at 36 years of age, Fakhar may be one of the casualties, especially with Saim Ayub set to return from his ankle injury soon.
If the reports of his retirement turn out to be true, Fakhar Zaman will bid farewell to the game as one of the most potent openers in contemporary ODI cricket. With franchise cricket thriving across the globe, Fakhar is expected to remain a familiar face on cricketing screens for years to come.
