The Lahore High Court (LHC) has directed authorities to ensure electric vehicle (EV) charging stations are installed at all fuel stations as part of efforts to tackle smog.
During a hearing on environmental pollution, Justice Shahid Karim expressed dissatisfaction over the lack of effective measures to control smog and water wastage.
Declaring a water emergency, the court ordered the installation of water meters and instructed the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) to introduce tax relief for eco-friendly buildings.
The Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA) was tasked with restoring canal water, while the LDA and DHA were instructed to establish at least one Miyawaki forest in every sector. The court also emphasized the need for an incentive program to convert petrol-powered rickshaws to electric ones.
Criticizing WASA’s poor performance, Justice Karim noted little progress in water meter installations. Additionally, he instructed authorities to create parking facilities under a public-private partnership.
The hearing on various smog-related petitions was adjourned until March 21.
