Pakistan Women’s Football Team Back in Play for Asian Cup Qualifiers

In a significant boost to women’s football in the country, Pakistan has officially joined 33 other teams in the race for the AFC Women’s Asian Cup Australia 2026—Asia’s most prestigious women’s national team competition. A total of 37 Member Associations expressed interest for a chance to join hosts Australia, as well as China, Korea Republic, and Japan, in the tournament, with eight berths up for grabs.

Pakistan’s place in the competition had been uncertain due to recent turmoil within the Pakistan Football Federation (PFF). The women’s team was poised to bear the brunt of the PFF’s financial struggles, with their participation in the upcoming Asian Cup seemingly all but over. However, this revival offers a golden opportunity for the Women’s National Team to leave its mark on international football.

The Qualifiers—scheduled from June 23 to July 5, 2025—will feature a group-stage format at centralized venues yet to be determined. Pakistan will be eager to make history by securing one of the remaining slots in the 12-team finals.

The path to qualification for the 2026 Asian Cup will be challenging for the Pakistan women’s football team, as the likes of DPR Korea, Chinese Taipei, Thailand, Uzbekistan, and other rising contenders are also in the mix. Nevertheless, growing interest and investment in women’s football within Pakistan is an encouraging sign. Should the team earn its place in Australia, it would mark a monumental step forward for the sport back home, inspiring future generations of female footballers.

The AFC Women’s Asian Cup Australia 2026 itself runs from March 1 to 21, 2026, marking only the second time the competition has featured 12 teams—an expansion from the eight-team format used before the 2022 edition. Matches will take place across three Australian cities—Sydney, Perth, and the Gold Coast—utilizing world-class stadiums.

As the countdown to the qualifiers begins, Pakistani fans will be watching closely to see if their national team can seize this opportunity to shine on Asia’s biggest stage.
