Former Pakistan Head Coach Sanctioned for Discriminatory Remarks

Grant Bradburn, best known in Pakistan for his stint as the cricket team’s head coach, now finds himself at the center of controversy following allegations of discriminatory conduct during his time with Glamorgan Cricket Club.

In December 2024, the Cricket Regulator of ECB Limited leveled charges against Bradburn, accusing him of three breaches under Regulation 3.3 of the Professional Conduct Regulations 2024. These rules prohibit any behavior that could tarnish the reputation of cricket or bring any cricketer—or the ECB itself—into disrepute. An internal investigation by Glamorgan led to his dismissal from the club, underscoring the seriousness of the allegations.

Grant Bradburn’s actions reportedly included asking players of Asian descent about their “real age,” followed by remarks such as “is that your CricInfo age,” which implied that the reported ages might not be genuine. In another instance, he was alleged to have questioned the merit of selection decisions in Pakistan by asking whether they would “pick their friends and cousins or pick their names out of a hat.”

During fielding practice sessions, his language again came under scrutiny when he criticized a lack of intensity by comparing the team unfavorably to “Western Storm” and implying that the players were “throwing like girls.” Such comments have been widely denounced as both unprofessional and discriminatory.

In response to these findings, a CDC adjudicator issued Bradburn a formal reprimand along with a caution regarding his future conduct. He has been required to attend a course on discrimination, equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) and has been handed a suspended fine of £500.

Bradburn’s case serves as a reminder that influential roles—especially those with international experience, such as his tenure with Pakistan—carry a significant responsibility in fostering inclusive environments.
