Pakistan’s star batter and Peshawar Zalmi’s captain Babar Azam has experienced plenty of highs in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) over the years — but when asked to pick his most cherished moment from the tournament, the answer came straight from the heart and involved South Africa’s AB de Villiers.
Speaking about his PSL journey, Babar revealed that meeting the South African legend — a player he idolizes — remains his standout memory from the league.
“Meeting my idol, AB de Villiers, was my favorite moment in the PSL. I learned a lot from him,” Babar said while reflecting on his PSL career during an introductory press conference ahead of PSL X.
De Villiers, regarded as one of the most innovative and impactful batters of the modern era, featured in the 2019 edition of the PSL for Lahore Qalandars. For Babar, who has often credited AB’s style and approach as a source of inspiration, the opportunity to interact with him was nothing short of special.
The respect between the duo is mutual, with AB de Villiers often speaking highly of Babar Azam in recent years.
While the meeting with AB de Villiers tops his personal list, Babar didn’t forget to mention another career-defining achievement — winning the PSL title with Karachi Kings in 2020.
“Another highlight was winning the title with Karachi Kings,” Babar added.
That victory marked Karachi Kings’ first-ever PSL title, with Babar playing a pivotal role in the final against Lahore Qalandars. He was the Player of the Match for his unbeaten 63-run knock that helped secure the silverware.
Currently leading Peshawar Zalmi in the PSL, Babar continues to add to his legacy — both as a top-order batter and as a captain. Yet, moments like meeting his hero remind fans that behind the global cricket superstar is a boy who once dreamed of greatness while watching his idols light up the world stage.
