Rashid Latif Believes PSL is Not Even Top 5 Leagues in the World

The 10th season of the much-anticipated Pakistan Super League (PSL X) kicked off with a bang following a festive opening ceremony. While many are glad to see the return of PSL, some are disgruntled with the current product.

Former Pakistani cricketer Rashid Latif has raised concerns about the declining trajectory of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) over the past two years, citing a drop in both quality and financial performance. Speaking candidly, Latif contrasted the league’s current state with its successful early years, urging reforms to restore its stature.

According to Latif, the PSL’s first four seasons, beginning in 2016, were marked by excellence. High-caliber cricket, participation from top international players, and superior production and broadcasting standards defined the league’s reputation. However, he pinpointed the fifth season, starting in 2020, as the onset of a downward trend. Latif attributed this decline to instability within the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), the PSL’s governing body.

Frequent changes in PSL leadership have been a significant factor, Rashid Latif noted. “Numerous PSL directors have been replaced, and many appointees lacked professionalism,” he stated.

This turnover, he argued, has disrupted the league’s management and vision, impacting its ability to maintain high standards. Latif also highlighted a notable gap in leadership: no former cricketer has been entrusted with managing the PSL, potentially limiting the integration of on-field expertise into its administration.
