The Basant festival, set to take place next February in Lahore, is gearing up with detailed preparations to ensure a safe and enjoyable event.
A closed-door meeting was held under the guidance of Patron-in-Chief Mian Nawaz Sharif to discuss the implementation of various regulations, including a proposal to enforce a two-day ban on motorcycles during the festival.
Key Preparations and Regulations for Basant
The meeting included key officials such as Lahore’s CCP Commissioner Sadiq Khamiana, Commissioner Zaid bin Maqsood, DG of Walled City Kamran Lashari, and representatives from the Kite Flying Association. They reviewed the safety measures needed for a successful Basant celebration and discussed the regulation of kite flying and related activities.
A significant part of the preparation involves ensuring the safety of the kite flying thread. Tests on the threads to be used for Basant have already been conducted at the PCSIR Laboratory, ensuring that only safe and approved threads will be manufactured for the event. Additionally, a rehearsal will take place in June at a designated location to test the kites and threads for compliance.
Motorcycle Ban and Kite Regulations
To maintain public safety, enforcing a two-day ban on motorcycles during the festival has been proposed. This measure is intended to reduce accidents and enhance safety for festival-goers. Furthermore, certain types of kites will be prohibited, including the “Charkhi” kites, while the sale of specific types of thread will also be restricted. Large kites and “Gudda” (kite reels) will not be permitted.
Tourism and International Participation
Basant will be celebrated both during the day and at night, with special permissions granted for certain kite sizes. The festival will also be open to international tourists, with efforts made to invite and accommodate visitors from abroad.
Authorities are working hard to ensure the event is a safe and memorable experience for both residents and tourists alike. With the proposed regulations and extensive preparations, Basant 2025 is expected to be one of the most vibrant and well-organized celebrations in Lahore’s history.
