Ali Tareen Reveals How PSL Can Turn More Exciting Next Season

As the Pakistan Super League (PSL) celebrates its tenth anniversary, one of its most passionate stakeholders, Multan Sultans owner Ali Tareen, has shared some innovative ideas on how to further enhance the league.

In a recent episode of ProSports’ podcast, Tareen opened up about the challenges facing Pakistan’s premier T20 competition, particularly the decreasing popularity. With low fan turnouts and one-sided contests, he has plenty of suggestions on how to improve the experience both on screens and on the pitch, especially since PSL X has yet to meet expectations.

Tareen, who has transformed the Sultans into a well-oiled machine, laid out a series of constructive recommendations for the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to help the PSL evolve into a high-quality tournament.

Ali Tareen Offer's Suggestions on How to Make PSL Fixtures More Exciting

“I want to sit everyone down—PCB and other franchises—and say, let’s have dedicated meetings to brainstorm how we can make the PSL better. Anything goes, and we will look for ideas that appeal to everyone,” he said. He pointed to innovations in foreign leagues as examples: “What did the Big Bash do? The two-over power surge, and there’s an impact sub in the IPL. Now think about what we can do. For example, maybe we can have a trial ball. Whether it’s a good idea or not is irrelevant; just start thinking.”

Tareen had some other intriguing ideas as well. “One thing could be not tempering but ‘ball preparation’ within reason, so you get reverse swing in the latter part of the innings, creating a more even contest between bat and ball. Maybe we announce 12 players and, after the toss, choose the XI. There are so many possibilities. Maybe one guy could bat twice—just think.”

He also emphasized the importance of enhancing the fan experience to improve the PSL product. “Think of how we can get the crowd engaged. Maybe during the break, we can have a six-hitting competition or something like a family race. Just think and talk about how we can improve. Maybe we get an international singer for the PSL anthem next year,” he added.

Will the PCB Listen?

Tareen is not the first to question the product being presented to viewers this season. PSL X has highlighted the league’s ongoing shortcomings, and his blueprint offers timely and actionable insights. The PCB now faces the delicate task of balancing corporate expectations while producing an attractive product that will draw fans closer to the competition.

Ali Tareen’s message is clear: without improvements, the PSL will continue to wane, and for someone as invested in cricket as he is, that is simply unacceptable.

The PSL stands at a crossroads after ten years of its journey. If it wishes to see another decade, it will need to innovate, and Tareen’s suggestions are the right place to start.
