Why Did Babar Azam Not Open for Peshawar Vs Islamabad?

Peshawar Zalmi skipper Babar Azam returned to form against Islamabad United in the Pakistan Super League (PSL X), scoring a steady fifty and chasing down United’s modest target of 144 runs.

However, fans were a bit surprised to see Saim Ayub open with Mitchell Owen and not Babar Azam.

The reason behind this tactical shift was revealed after the match by Peshawar Zalmi’s team director, Inzamam-ul-Haq. Speaking at the post-match press conference, Inzamam explained that the decision for Babar to bat at number three was made by Babar himself.

According to Inzamam, Babar believed that Mitchell Owen could provide more aggressive hitting at the top of the order, potentially giving Zalmi a stronger start. This move, Inzamam noted, was a reflection of Babar’s sacrifice for Zalmi. He praised Babar’s maturity and strategic thinking, which he believes are crucial qualities for a captain.

The new opening combination did not deliver the explosive start Zalmi might have hoped for. Despite this, the team managed to secure a convincing win, thanks in large part to Babar Azam’s steady performance at number three and a mature partnership with 19-year-old Maaz Sadaqat, who played a composed and impactful innings under pressure.

The team director also took the opportunity to commend young Maaz Sadaqat for his temperament and performance, emphasizing how important it is for young players to seize opportunities in high-pressure situations.

Reflecting on Zalmi’s journey in the tournament so far, Inzamam admitted that the team had a slow start but expressed optimism about their prospects in the coming matches. With tactical decisions like these and emerging talent stepping up, Peshawar Zalmi appears determined to make a strong comeback in this year’s PSL.
