For the first time in Pakistan Super League (PSL) history, Peshawar Zalmi has failed to qualify for the playoffs, prompting owner Javed Afridi to promise sweeping changes for the next season.
In a message to fans on X (formerly Twitter), Afridi expressed disappointment with the team’s performance, which saw Zalmi win just four out of ten matches in PSL 10. “Sorry Zalmi fans. Truly disappointing from a few Zalmi lads. This is a best platform to make your national career path. Will strictly follow through with utmost changes next season IA,” he wrote.
Led by Babar Azam, Zalmi’s playoff hopes ended after a 26-run defeat to Lahore Qalandars in a rain-shortened match in Rawalpindi. The team finished with 8 points and a negative net run-rate of -0.293, a significant drop for a side that has previously won the title in 2017 and reached the final four times.
Afridi assured supporters that “major changes are coming” and emphasized plans to rebuild the squad with renewed determination. He also announced new initiatives to boost fan engagement, including Fan Parks, a dedicated Peshawar Zalmi fan zone inside stadiums, and expanded marketing campaigns.
Afridi concluded by calling for unity among cricket fans, stating, “This is not just a team, it’s a movement. As a national product, let’s unite to support all PSL teams in the spirit of cricket.”
