Ashab Irfan Reaches Final of South Australian Open Squash

Pakistan’s rising squash star Ashab Irfan has powered his way into the final of the South Australian Open 2025, delivering a commanding performance in the semifinals to underline his status as one of the most promising names on the PSA Challenger Tour from the country.

Facing compatriot Hamza Khan in an all-Pakistan semifinal at the Adelaide-based $9,000 PSA event, the top-seeded Ashab looked composed and clinical from the outset. He dismantled Hamza’s rhythm early, taking control throughout the match to seal a straight-games victory: 11-3, 11-8, 11-7.

It was a statement win, not just in terms of the scoreline, but in the manner of execution. Ashab dominated the opening game with ease, using precise length and deft drops to keep Hamza off balance. The second and third games saw more resistance, but Ashab’s consistency and tactical clarity proved too much for the former World Junior Champion.

This win puts Ashab Irfan into the final of the South Australian Open, where he will face Malaysia’s Duncan Lee, who has impressed on his own side of the draw with gritty wins and athletic shot-making. The eighth seed Lee is also coming off a straight-sets win over Andes Ling, adding intrigue to the final.

The final presents a major opportunity for Ashab to capture a PSA Challenger title and continue his upward trajectory in the world rankings.

The 2025 South Australian Open has already seen strong representation from Asian players, and Ashab’s run to the final reinforces Pakistan’s long-standing legacy in the sport. With his blend of athleticism, shot selection, and temperament, Ashab Irfan looks poised to take the next step, and tomorrow’s final could be a defining moment in that journey.
