A severe heatwave sweeping across Pakistan has triggered forest fires at eight locations in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), raising alarm over the region’s environmental vulnerability and public safety. Temperatures in some forest areas have soared to 48°C, contributing to the rapid ignition and spread of the fires.

Department spokesperson Latifur Rehman confirmed that the fires in Petu Dara and Adenzai have been successfully contained, but operations continue in other areas where rugged terrain is hampering firefighting efforts.
The firefighting operation involves coordinated efforts by the Forest Department, Rescue 1122, civil defence teams, and local volunteers. Rescue workers have been instructed to remain stationed at affected sites until the cooling process is fully completed.
Extreme Heatwave Exacerbating Conditions
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has warned that the ongoing heatwave is expected to persist through the week, with temperatures significantly above normal in most regions. In forested areas, this extreme heat is rapidly drying out vegetation, increasing the risk of ignition from even minor sources of heat or negligence.
Public Advisory and Preventive Measures
The Forest Department has urged the public to avoid camping or cooking in forested regions, especially in the Hazara and Malakand divisions. Authorities have also appealed for public cooperation in protecting forest resources and avoiding any activities that could lead to fire outbreaks.
